Get Caught Reading Giveaway!

In remembrance of my lovely bookstore I left behind after our move, I am holding my second annual "Get Caught Reading" contest. Raising awareness and appreciation of people with Down syndrome and your local independent bookstore is the ultimate goal of the contest. People with Down syndrome and independent bookstores have something in common: a unique quality that should be celebrated and valued for their contributions to the community. Read More...

November 22 is America Unchained Day
What if everyone shopped local for just one day? That's the challenge posed by America Unchained Day. If we all spend $100 at local, indie stores, we could pump more than $2.9 billion into local economies during this recession-plagued season. Maximize the impact of your dollars by joining others in shopping, dining out, and doing business only with locally-owned independents for one day. Then, why not come back and share what you've found here in the Indie Community?
- Find an indie retailer in your community who isn't yet listed on IndieBound.org and add them to the map
- Post a review of your favorite store
- Make a Wish List
- Invite a friend to join the community--and share their favorite indies
America Unchained Day is organized by the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA). Interested in participating? Visit http://www.amiba.net/Unchained.html.
Why shop Indie?
When you shop at an independently-owned business, your entire community benefits:
The Economy- Spend $100 at a local and $68 of that stays in your community. Spend the same $100 at a national chain, and your community only sees $43.
- Local businesses create higher-paying jobs for our neighbors.
- More of your taxes are reinvested in your community--where they belong.
- Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon footprint.
- Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify your community.
- Local retailers are your friends and neighbors—support them and they’ll support you.
- Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national chains.
- More independents means more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique community.
Now is the time to stand up and join your fellow individuals in the IndieBound mission supporting local businesses and celebrating independents.
IndieBound supports Independent Business Alliances around the country. To find an alliance near you, visit AMIBA or BALLE.
